Setting the Christmas table

Linen, lighting and a few details can change the feel of a table. Here are some ideas for Christmas using things you love, along with practical tips to help your guests feel comfortable.

Choose a tablecloth

A dark linen tablecloth brings out white plates and clear glassware. For a lighter setting, choose natural or ivory linen.

Let the cloth hang over each side of the table. Napkins can match the tablecloth or add a deeper colour, such as burgundy.

Combine the plates

You can mix plain and patterned plates. A shared colour helps them work together. Start with the tableware you already enjoy using.

If you use a charger, place the dinner plate on top, then add a starter plate if needed. Allow around 60 centimetres per person. Place the plates two or three centimetres from the edge of the table.

Arrange the centre of the table

A few pears on a platter, flowers in a small vase and an olive branch make a simple Christmas table decoration. Choose a low arrangement so guests can see one another.

On a rectangular table, spread the decorations along its length. On a round table, group them in the centre. Leave enough space for serving dishes.

Add candles

Candles give the table a soft light. Try grouping a few candleholders of different heights. Unscented candles let you enjoy the aromas of the meal.

Place candleholders on a stable surface, well away from flowers, foliage and linen. Make sure they leave room for serving.

Set out glasses and cutlery

Place forks on the left and knives on the right, with the blades facing the plate. Arrange cutlery in the order it will be used, from the outside in. Dessert cutlery can be brought out when dessert is served.

Set out a water glass and the wine glasses needed for the meal. You can mix everyday glasses with a few vintage pieces. Make sure each guest can easily reach their glass.

Arrange napkins and place cards

A simply folded napkin can sit on the plate or beside the cutlery. Add a ribbon or a small card with your guest’s name for a personal touch.

Before guests arrive, check that everyone has enough room to sit comfortably and that serving dishes are easy to reach. Light the candles just before sitting down to eat.
